It took his thousands of experiments over several years to perfect the material, which was versatile and could be coloured, cut and polished to great effect on his products. It could be coloured with a range of mineral oxide stains.\r\nThe frame was made by Matthew Boulton (1728-1809), a contemporary of Josiah Wedgwood, and they were both members of the Lunar Society. Boulton produced mounts for Wedgwood products, notably jasperware, decorated by means of cut steel or made of ormolu.","physicalDescription":"Medallion, blue jasperware in ormolu frame; oval blue jasperware with white applied relief depicting head and shoulders of Aeschines, facing forward, mounted in oval ormolu frame with scrolled and floral embellishments.","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Josiah Wedgwood and Sons","id":"A1450"},"association":{"text":"manufacturers","id":"AAT25230"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"jasperware","id":"x30174"},{"text":"ormolu","id":"AAT11048"}],"techniques":[{"text":"relief","id":"AAT53622"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Jasperware, ormolu, applied relief","categories":[{"text":"V&A Wedgwood Collection","id":"THES276060"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"WED","id":"THES270009"},"images":["2025PD5357"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"WDG1","id":"THES264736"},"free":"","case":"CA22","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"medallions","id":"AAT77357"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Etruria","id":"x33200"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1775-1780","earliest":"1775-01-01","latest":"1780-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"V&A Wedgwood Collection.
