This opulent ensemble evokes the hedonism of Edo period (1615-1868) Japanese dress. Bold pine trees and cranes, hand painted in gold, adorn the kimono style coat and a gold obi (waist sash), knotted at the front in the manner of fashionable courtesans, complements the purple satin dress. The ensemble is completed by a dramatic headpiece which rises above like the bough of a bonsai tree, echoing the design on the coat. The open coat is of very fine, almost transparent black silk, with long kimono sleeves which are open at the inner side. It is seamed at the side, with the back being a single piece of fabric. It is hand painted (kaki-e) in gold with large, bold pine trees and cranes. The dress is of purple satin silk, with v-neck at front and back, panelled to create a shaped waist and with a long slit up the centre back seam. There is a zip at the back and the lining is of darker purple silk. The obi is of gold and black pleated lamé, loosely hemmed at one end.
