Wedgwood marketed the plate in the United States from early 1970. The first plaque produced by the factory was presented to the American astronaut, Captain James Lovell (b. 1928) by Wedgwood Managing Director Arthur Bryan (1923-2011). Lovell had piloted Apollo 8 - the first of the NASA space missions to orbit the moon.
