In 1766, Josiah Wedgwood I (1730-1795) purchased a 142-hectare estate and renamed it ‘Etruria’; a name based on the widely held misconception that classical Greek and Roman pottery was ‘Etruscan’. Wedgwood aimed to create a state-of-the-art factory, which would improve the efficiency and organisation of production. At the same time, his plans included a village for his workers and his family home Etruria Hall.
