Utilised primarily to test architectural and design products, it includes the possibility of accelerating time through intensified light exposure. Faulkner photographs a camera and tripod in the laboratory before making colour prints by hand in his studio (no printing machine is involved). Both subject matter and form relate to the process of exposing images, although laboratory and studio - one ultra precise, the other rudimentary - offer very different extremes of control over the manipulation of light. \r\n\r\nFor Faulkner, Artificial Sun is a conceptual meditation on photographic materiality and the (dis)location of the industrial darkroom. His hand-made prints, formed in a darkened studio, are rough and ready, scarred by drips, various signs of manufacture such as tape and pin marks, and random colour registration often due to exhausted chemicals. They have an obvious painterly quality in which the artist playfully manipulates the surface of the print. The work is consciously experimental and imperfect, the antithesis of meanings - such as smoothness and perfection - traditionally attached to industrial colour printing. Faulkner's work relates to lively questions in current photographic thinking, including the fluidity (and fluids) of the medium, the changing value accorded analogue (im)perfection in relation to the digital, and the historic legacy of the darkroom.
