Pugin, pioneer of the nineteenth-century Gothic Revival, to master builder, George Myers. Pugin and Myers worked together from 1837-52. These drawings were originally individual designs sent to Myers over the course of their collaboration on a variety of projects. They were later compiled into an album. \r\n\r\nMyers was one of a number of small circle of collaborators who had the practical construction knowledge to realise Pugin's drawings. Pugin relied on Myers for building, stonework and woodwork. To furnish Myers's buildings he worked with metalworker and stained-glass manufacturer John Hardman Jr, furniture and textiles manufacturer John Gregory Crace and ceramics entrepreneur Herbert Minton. Together they had a considerable impact on nineteenth-century art and design, most notably at the Great Exhibition where Pugin's Medieval Court proved hugely popular and provided some of the first acquisitions by the South Kensington Museum (now V&A).\r\n\r\nThe museum purchased the album in 2023 thanks to the generosity of The Rick Mather David Scrase Foundation.","historicalContext":"George Myers was one of the nineteenth century's great builders. He was born in Hull in 1803, completing his apprenticeship in 1827 and developed his business building factories and terraced housing. \r\n\r\nWhile he worked for over 100 architects, he is best remembered for his work for Pugin, in particular for building Pugin's family home, the Grange and St Augustine's Church in Ramsgate, as well as St George's Church (from 1852, Cathedral) in Southwark and St Chad's Cathedral, Birmingham. His work featured heavily in Pugin's 'Medieval Court' at the Great Exhibition in 1851. \r\n\r\nMyers moved to London to work more closely with Pugin in 1842, living opposite St George's, Southwark, until 1853. His house in St George's Road is recognised by English Heritage with a blue plaque. Myers also carried out restoration work on the Tower of London and Windsor Castle. He died in London in 1875.","briefDescription":"Page in an album of designs by A.W.N. Pugin, formerly the property of his builder George Myers.
