Vander was an important silversmith and retailer, founded by Cornelius Joshua Vanderpump (1837-1904) in 1886 and based in London. The firm produced a wide range of high-quality silverware, jewellery and civic plate such as trophies. Vanderpump began his apprenticeship with Martin Goldstein of Macrae and Goldstein, a successful silversmith partnership founded in 1870 in Covent Garden. Through Macrae’s network, the firm supplied Elkington & Co., jewellers and silversmiths Harry Emanuel and Hunt & Roskell, as well as Widdowson & Veale who were goldsmiths, jewellers and sword cutlers to Prince Albert. Vander acquired the firm when Goldstein retired in 1886. It was Vander and then his sons, who developed the business by expanding its activity and reputation in Sheffield and internationally. In 1939, the workshop moved to new premises in Fetter Lane near Hatton Garden which suffered devastation during World War II. \n\r\nIn 1948, Vanders began the production of hand-forged flatware using the dies obtained by The Goldsmiths and Silversmiths Company. During the 1950s, Vanders began to rely more on the Sheffield trade for production and made several business acquisitions. In 1958 they purchased the flatware dies and patterns of silversmiths, Atkin Bros and in c.1965 acquired three other Sheffield businesses: Roberts & Belk Ltd, William Bush & Son and Benton Brothers. In 1971, further dies and tools of Mappin & Webb Ltd were acquired from British Silverware Ltd. This drawing of a tureen is inspired by the work of renowned silversmith, Paul de Lamerie (1688-1751) and similar in style to the soup tureens, LOAN:GILBERT.723:1 to 3-2008 and LOAN:GILBERT.722:1 to 3-2008.\r\n\r\n","physicalDescription":"","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"C.
