This type of glaze was called chuiqing or 'blown blue' in China, and known as bleu soufflé or fouetté in Europe. The name derives from the particular technique required to apply the glaze on the surface: the powdered cobalt was blown through a bamboo cane that had a fine gauze at one of the extremities.\r\n\r\nObjects with powder-blue glaze were produced since the late 17th century, and by the early 18th century fine gilded decorations of flowers, landscapes and symbolic motifs were added on the surface. They were particularly favoured in the Middle East but also widely exported in Europe, where they were used as tableware in the residences of aristocrats and wealthy people, or exhibited on the walls and in the niches of the so-called 'porcelain rooms'.","physicalDescription":"Porcelain jar and lid, with ovoid form, rounded shoulders rising to a cylindrical neck, and low foot; the domed lid is surmounted by a bud-shape knob. Powder-blue ground with reserved panels, two containing the motif of 'One hundred antiquities' and other two flowering trees and birds painted in underglaze blue; round the shoulder are four smaller panels with flowers, as on the lid.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"porcelain","id":"AAT10662"},{"text":"cobalt oxide","id":"AAT233422"}],"techniques":[{"text":"painted","id":"x30138"},{"text":"glazed","id":"AAT53914"},{"text":"blue and white","id":"x44546"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Porcelain with powder-blue glaze and painted in underglaze blue","categories":[{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"},{"text":"Porcelain","id":"THES48907"}],"styles":[{"text":"Qing","id":"AAT18478"},{"text":"Blue and white (Asia)","id":"x44958"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"EAS","id":"THES48596"},"images":["2008BT2395"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"145 (VA)","id":"THES49865"},"free":"","case":"8","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"145 (VA)","id":"THES49865"},"free":"","case":"8","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Jar","id":""}],[{"text":"Lid","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Jingdezhen","id":"x32230"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1700-10","earliest":"1700-01-01","latest":"1710-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"45.1","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"25.4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Purchased from James Orrock (48 Bedford Square), accessioned in 1887.
