Theatre posters are an essential marketing tool for productions. Historically, they were the predominant way of promoting a show. Nowadays, posters are still a recognisable aspect of the West End, adorning the walls of the underground escalators. As information is now primarily found via the internet, contemporary poster design takes its lead from a production’s brand identity which is used across social media platforms, print media and merchandise. The idea of presenting a show as a brand developed during the 1980s with mega-musicals <i>Cats</i> and <i>Phantom of the Opera</i> with the cat's eyes and Phantom mask becoming identifiable, quasi-logos for the shows in the public’s consciousness. \r\n\r\nGaby Elyahou collected hundreds of theatre posters while running Gaby’s Deli, an eatery situated in London’s West End on Charing Cross Road, adjacent to numerous theatres. Gaby’s Deli opened in 1964 and soon attracted many West End audiences and those working in the performance industry itself, including Charlie Chaplin. When threatened with closure in 2012, the establishment was saved through a petition and fundraising by celebrities including Miriam Margoles, Vanessa Redgrave, Mike Leigh and Simon Callow. The deli’s influence and impact on the West End community was highlighted through media coverage of Elyahou’s retirement in 2018 (articles in The Guardian and Time Out). Elyahou was frequently given posters by venues and companies to act as promotional tools for their shows in the area.
