The astronomically aligned temple and kund (stepwell) is dedicated to Surya, the Sun god. The kund is said to have been built first, the temple later. The pyramidal steps leading to the kund are punctuated at four levels by 108 shrines dedicated to different gods, creating an architectural masterpiece.
