Regarded by many as the inventor of streetwear, he elevated everyday clothes with subtle, clever design features and quality craftsmanship. Presenting both menswear and womenswear collections together, with no obvious distinction between the two lines, Lang was known for his gender-blurring, functional ‘urban uniform’ designs that many other designers have since emulated. Based in New York, the Helmut Lang name became synonymous with a downtown, ‘cool’ look, operating within the premium fashion market. \n\nIn May 2023, Peter Do (b. 1990, Biên Hòa, Vietnam) was announced as the new Creative Director of Helmut Lang. Do has cited Lang’s original designs as an inspiration for his own work, as evidenced by his debut collection for the brand presented in New York in September 2023, from which this suit hails. Opening the Spring-Summer 2024 collection, the black wool suit encapsulated Do's vision for the brand. Enlivened with neon pink \"seatbelt\" strapping, the suit references both Lang’s signature androgynous tailoring, particularly his Autumn-Winter 1994 collection, and his frequent allusions to bondage, particularly his Autumn-Winter 2003 collection which featured similar seatbelt style harnesses. The suit was seen again in look 2 worn by a man, reiterating the gender-blurring nature of Lang’s design legacy. The pink stripe delineating the outer trouser legs can be read as a reference to the trouser stripes typical of military uniforms, or, tuxedos.
