Inspired by Kumar’s own experiences working in Bollywood, this production both celebrates the vibrancy of South Asian cinema and explores the darker undercurrents of the industry. While working in her hometown of Milton Keynes, Frankie is scouted by a Bollywood director to feature in his upcoming movie. Leaving her old life behind, Frankie moves to Mumbai and is launched to stardom. However, Frankie struggles to adjust to the highly competitive and inherently sexist nature of the industry, loosing her sense of identity in the process. Frankie also grapples with her British and South Asian cultural identities, feeling out of place in both Britain and India.\r\n\r\nThe designs contained in this sketchbook are for a costume worn by the character Malika, a veteran of the Bollywood film industry, who is usurped by Frankie’s rise to stardom during her musical number ‘Rise and Fall’. The song references the short careers of female stars in Bollywood, who are quickly demoted to playing mothers or older relatives, while their male counterparts enjoy long careers as heroes. While Malika begins as a rival to Frankie, by the end of the production both women work together to oppose sexist cultures in Bollywood.\r\n\r\n<i>Frankie Goes to Bollywood</i> premiered at Watford Palace Theatre between the 25 April to the 11 May 2024, before a regional tour at HOME Manchester, Beck Theatre Hayes, Queen’s Theatre Hornchurch, Wolverhampton Grand Theatre, Alhambra Bradford, Theatre Royal Windsor, Belgrade Theatre Coventry and New Theatre Cardiff, ending at the Southbank Centre in London (15 May to 18 August 2024).","physicalDescription":"Sketchbook of costume designs by Andy Kumar for 'Malika' in <i>Frankie Goes to Bollywood</i>.
