The play was written by Henry Arthur Jones and Henry Herman, with music by Michael Connelly and was produced by actor-manager Wilson Barrett (1846-1904) who starred as Wilfred Denver opposite Mary Eastlake (1856-1911) as his wife Mary Denver. The Silver King is considered the greatest melodramatic success of the 19th-century stage, and with Barrett playing Denver for 300 consecutive performances, it attracted large crowds to the elegantly fitted Royal Princess’s Theatre in Oxford Street that had been completely rebuilt in 1880 to the designs of the eminent theatre architect C.J. Phipps.\r\n\r\nBarrett took over the theatre as lessee in 1881 and made a great success with his first melodrama there, The Lights o’ London by G.R. Sims, produced that September. The production ran for 226 nights, opened on Broadway in December 1881 and was made into silent films in 1919 and 1923. The Silver King, with several of the same cast members including Mary Eastlake, E.S. Willard, Charles Coote and his brother George Barrett, was an even bigger success than its predecessor. Its thrilling plot concerns the hapless Denver who becomes implicated in the murder of his wife’s former admirer, embroiled in revenge and the London criminal underworld before jumping off a moving train to Liverpool, reading reports of his own death and escaping to America, returning to London incognito as ‘the Silver King’ having struck lucky in silver mining in Nevada, The Silver King was made into two silent films, the 1919 Paramount version directed by George Irving, starring William Faversham as Denver, and the British 1929 version directed by T. Hayes Hunter and made at Cricklewood Studios and Lime Grove Studios starring Percy Marmont as Denver.\r\n","physicalDescription":"Printed silk souvenir programme with silver bullion fringe and tassels, printed with details of the first performance of the melodrama at the Royal Princess's Theatre, 16th November 1882 ","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"silk","id":"AAT243428"},{"text":"silver","id":"x34766"},{"text":"printing ink","id":"AAT187371"},{"text":"printing ink","id":"AAT187371"}],"techniques":[{"text":"printed","id":"x46159"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Letterpress printing on woven silk with silver bullion fringe border with tassels at each corner","categories":[{"text":"Melodrama","id":"THES275497"},{"text":"Souvenirs","id":"THES287379"},{"text":"Theatre","id":"THES250537"},{"text":"Entertainment & Leisure","id":"THES48959"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&P","id":"THES48602"},"images":["2024NY1825","2024NY1826","2024NW1692"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"CAGE","id":"THES49689"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"silk programmes","id":"THES285409"}],[{"text":"souvenirs","id":"AAT28886"}],[{"text":"programmes","id":"AAT27240"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"No","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1882","earliest":"1882-01-01","latest":"1882-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"S.269-1981","id":"O1113344"},"association":""}],"creditLine":"Given by Eileen and Vince Carter","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"31.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":"maximum height including fringe"},{"dimension":"Width","value":"46.0","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":"maximum width including fringe"},{"dimension":"Height","value":"25.0","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":"maximum height excluding fringe"},{"dimension":"Width","value":"40.0","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":"maximum width excluding fringe"}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Purchased by the donors at auction at HRD Auction Rooms, Sandown, Isle of Wight, 21st November 2023, as part of lot number 36.
