Both paintings were shown at the Royal Academy, London, in 1794, with the titles <i>The Husbandman's Enjoyment</i> and <i>Poor Old Woman's Comfort</i>, respectively.\r\n\r\nThe artist, William Redmore Bigg (1755-1828), painted portaits of the gentry. He also painted ‘genre’ scenes such as these, featuring sentimental images of rustic life and especially cottage interiors and exteriors peopled by a virtuous and hard-working peasantry.
