Her photographs explore fashion and style as expressions of Black British identity, often with a focus on music culture. After graduating from the London College of Communication in 1994, Baptiste went on to work for clients including Nike, Levi’s and Sony Music, and has shot portraits of music artists including Jay Z, The Notorious B.I.G., Estelle and Nas. \n\nBaptiste photographed a female ragga dancer doing the ‘butterfly’ dance move. Ragga music originated in Jamaica in the 1980s, building on dancehall and reggae styles by using electronic music and sampling linked to both hip hop and dance music trends. The music style became increasingly popular in Britain during the 1990s as it fused with hip hop. Female ragga dancers typically wear elaborate and embellished costumes.
