Beginning first as an indoor event in 1959 before becoming an outdoor festival in 1966, Notting Hill Carnival was established as a community-led event to celebrate Caribbean culture in the UK to challenge increasing racial violence and tensions in the mid-twentieth century. The Carnival has since evolved into the largest street party in Europe, garnering over a million visitors in a single weekend.
