He has documented resistance to racism in Britain during the 1970s and 1980s. After working in Australia for various newspapers, he returned to London in 1976 and established his own design and photography partnership. He was the official photographer for Rock Against Racism, a collective of political activists and musicians that organised concerts with an anti-racist message across the country, and designed its fanzine <i>Temporary Hoarding</i> from 1976 to 1981. Shelton’s work has been widely published and exhibited, and is held in numerous collections including the Tate, The Photographers Gallery, and the National Portrait Gallery. \n\nShelton took this image of the crowd at the Rock Against Racism/Anti-Nazi League Carnival 2 in Brockwell Park, Brixton, on 24th September 1978. The lineup included Aswad, Misty in Roots, Elvis Costello and Stiff Little Fingers. Attendee numbers were estimated by various news outlets to be anywhere between 60, 000 and 150,000 – a proportion of which are captured here by Shelton.
