After working for British style and youth culture publication <i>i-D</i> magazine as a street fashion photographer, Swindells landed a role at <i>Time Out</i> magazine as Nightlife Editor in 1986, through which he was able to capture the nascent rave scene growing in the UK. \r\n\r\nBy the late 1980s, acid house had a strong presence within the UK’s nightlife. Influenced by American house music from Chicago and Detroit and European electronic dance music, acid house became a defining feature of the so-called ‘Summers of Love’ in 1988 and 1989 and rave culture that swept through the UK. Acid house was lambasted by the mainstream media for its association with illegal drugs and its use of unauthorised venues. \n\nThis photograph was taken in June 1988 at London club Heaven's weekly acid house night, 'Spectrum'. Run by Ian St Paul and record producer and DJ Paul Oakenfold, Spectrum quickly became a mainstay of the London acid house scene. Swindells captured the rave scene’s vibrancy and demonstrates the enthralment of clubgoer Desmond Murray as they dance in the spotlight alongside other ravers.  \r\n","physicalDescription":"A colour photograph of several people dancing in a nightclub.
