After being gifted a Kodak Brownie camera by a Black American serviceman, Phillips began to document life in his local community. His photographs capture the spirit and mood of the emerging Black British population in the decades following the Second World War, highlighting issues governing race, place and space in London. \r\n\r\nPhillips captured this image of bustling crowds and a steel pan player at Notting Hill Carnival in 1968. Beginning first as an indoor event in 1959 before becoming an outdoor festival in 1966, Notting Hill Carnival was established as a community-led event to celebrate Caribbean culture in the UK to challenge increasing racial violence and tensions in the mid-twentieth century. The Carnival has since evolved into the largest street party in Europe, garnering over a million visitors in a single weekend.
