Mario Prada’s granddaughter, Miuccia (b. 1948), joined the family business in 1975 as an accessories designer. In 1988, the company launched its first women’s ready-to-wear collection, designed by Miuccia Prada. Over the next three decades Prada became a leading luxury fashion house, known for Miuccia Prada’s modern designs that often drew unexpected inspiration and references from contemporary culture, art and design. In February 2020, the company announced that Belgian designer Raf Simons (b. 1968) was joining as co-creative director alongside Miuccia Prada. Simons previously held the position of creative director at Jil Sander, Christian Dior and Calvin Klein, as well as his own label. \n\nThe outfit is from Prada's Spring/Summer 2024 collection. In the show’s accompanying press release, Miuccia Prada said, ‘we wanted to focus on the work - the methods and techniques, the value. There is a respect for our work as designers, and the act of making clothes’. Simons added, ‘we wanted to talk about the craftsmanship - the complexity of work in these clothes’. The ensemble is characteristic of the collaboration between the two artistic directors, featuring deconstructed tailoring with unconventional and playful touches. The jacket of fine wool has a subtle pinstripe and is cut along conventional menswear lines so that it appears oversized, cinched at the waist with a simple belt. Tailored shorts match the jacket and are accompanied by a fringed overskirt punctuated with the unusual decoration of dressmaking grommets or eyelets in differing sizes, transposed elements that serve as subtle reference to the work of the atelier. The outfit is styled with large square-toed leather lace-up shoes and plain black socks.
