She began her music career as a member of the Grime collective Unorthodox, who garnered attention with their 2004 track ‘No Help or Handouts’. Nolay later gained solo success and went on to become a key figure in the male-dominated Grime genre. Her sharp lyrics address topics such as growing up in inner city London, misogyny, domestic violence and peer rivalry, affirming the social commentary that is foundational to Grime music. \n\r\nThe acclaim Nolay attracted on independent music media channels such as Channel U and SBTV led to her casting in the British television drama <i>Top Boy</i>.\n \r\nAiring from 2011 to 2023 and running for five series, <i>Top Boy</i> depicted an array of social issues within a fictitious east London housing estate. The ever-present undercurrent of violence generated by drug gangs offered insight into the relations between State and social class inequalities, while also examining the interpersonal relations - conflicts and pressures - between its central characters. The show was celebrated for its links to Black British music as contemporary artists were cast in a variety of roles, including Kano, Dave, Ashley Walters, Little Simz, Bashy and Trigga. Nolay played the role of Mandy in the second, fourth and fifth series of the show.\n\r\nThis coat was given to Nolay by the <i>Top Boy</i> production team whilst filming the show’s final series in 2022. Designed by streetwear brand Unknown London, it features prominent embroidery commemorating the cast and crew involved in the final series of the show. \r\n","physicalDescription":"A black puffer coat with cuffed sleeves and a hood.
