THEY HAD HAWKED THEIR SONGS RIGHT ROUND THE BUSINESS WITHOUT ENGENDERING ANY EXCITEMENT WHATSOEVER UNTIL THEY ARRIVED ON JONATHAN KING'S DOORSTEP. KING, HIMSELF A FORMER CHARTERHOUSE SCHOOLBOY, WAS ALSO NOT UNDULY IMPRESSED AT THE START, BUT DECIDED TO GIVE THEM A CHANCE AND GRADUALLY BECAME CONVERTED TO THEIR MUSIC. THEIR FIRST ALBUM HOWEVER, RELEASED ON DECCA AND TITLED \"GENESIS TO REVELATION\" DID LITTLE FOR THEM AND EVENTUALLY THEY LEFT DECCA TO JOIN TONY STRATTON-SMITH'S CHARISMA LABEL. IN THE EARLY DAYS WITH CHARISMA, THEY BAND'S VERY EXISTENCE WAS OFTEN IN JEOPARDY WITH LINE-UP CHANGES AND MONEY PROBLEMS A CONSTANT THREAT. AS RECENTLY AS LAST AUTUMN PETER GABRIEL CONFESSED THAT HE HAD DESPAIRED OF THE BAND EVER BECOMING MASSIVE IN TERMS OF POPULARITY. \"IF IT WAS GOING TO HAPPEN, IT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED BEFORE NOW,\" HE ADDED SADLY. BUT HE COULD NOT HAVE BEEN MORE WRONG. GRADUALLY THEIR AUDIENCES GREW NOT ONLY IN SIZE BUT AGE RANGE AND THEIR ALBUMS \"TRESPASS\", \"NURSERY CRYME\", \"FOXTROT\" AND \"GENESIS LIVE\" BEGAN TO COMMAND MORE AND MORE ATTENTION UNTIL NOW, WITH THEIR LATEST \"SELLING ENGLAND BY THE POUND\" THEY HAVE AN INSTANT SMASH WITH SELL-OUT CONCERTS BEING THE RULE RATHER THAN THE EXCEPTION.
