It is a loose adaptation of the semi-autobiographical book <i>The Seed and the Sower</i> by Laurence van der Post. It stars David Bowie, Tom Conti, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Takeshi Kitano and Jack Thompson, and follows the story of British officers imprisoned in a POW camp in Japanese occuped Java during the Second World War.\n\nThe production was filmed on the island of Rarotonga and in New Zealand throughout 1982. It was first released at Cannes Film Festival in May 1983, and then was released in the UK in August 1983 with its first screening at the Edinburgh International Film Festival. \n\nThis poster was designed to advertise the screening at the festival. It was designed by the Kruddart, a design company founded by Michael Coulson and Nichola Bruce, who designed multiple posters for the film release.
