He greatly admired the work of the artist and poet William Blake (1757-1827). He especially admired Blake’s visionary approach and his lack of respect for conventional watercolour techniques.\r\n\r\nThis watercolour has a magical, powerful and dreamlike quality. Palmer painted it during his ‘Shoreham Period’. He stayed in Shoreham, a village in the English county of Kent, from 1826 until about 1834.","physicalDescription":"An apple tree in blossom in a walled garden and beyond the tree stands a woman in a red robe.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Samuel Palmer","id":"A2333"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"water-colour","id":"AAT15045"}],"techniques":[{"text":"painting","id":"AAT54216"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Watercolour","categories":[{"text":"Paintings","id":"THES48917"},{"text":"Gardens & Gardening","id":"THES49002"}],"styles":[{"text":"British School","id":"x30967"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2012FH1505","2012FH1506","2006AP4157","2017KB7918"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLH (VA)","id":"THES49654"},"free":"","case":"SF","shelf":"22","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"watercolour","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Shoreham","id":"x31223"},"association":{"text":"painted","id":"x30138"},"note":"probably"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca.1830","earliest":"1825-01-01","latest":"1834-12-31"},"association":{"text":"painted","id":"x30138"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"28.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"22.3","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Watercolour entitled 'In a Shoreham Garden' by Samuel Palmer.
