The original introduction for the programme's release of Channel 4 featured Briggs walking through the countryside describing his inspiration for the story, before transitioning into the animated landscape, implying that his character is an older version of the boy James. When interest was shown for the film's distribution in the US, a search began for a celebrity name to introduce a new version of the programme. Bowie was an existing fan of Briggs' <i>When the Wind Blows</i>, and later provided a song for its animated adaptation.
