Bowie was suffering from severe burn out, extreme cocaine addiction, and estrangement from his wife Angela. Disenchanted with Hollywood, Bowie moved to Berlin with his assistant and and close friend Corinne 'Coco' Schwab, seeking anonymity and stability.\r\n\r\nCoco located an apartment for them above an auto parts store in the modest area of Schöneberg. The apartment,  Haupstraβe 155, was formed of seven rooms including an office and studio. Iggy Pop, who had just come out of a period of mental health crisis in which he admitted himself to UCLA’s neuropsychiatric institute, decided to join and moved into the Berlin flat. After an initial period of haunting local bars, Bowie and Iggy made a pact to get clean from cocaine and heroin together. \n\nTheir friend, the travel writer Rory Maclean, later recalled of the apartment 'Coco – the devoted, unsung heroine of Bowie’s career – had its walls painted white as a private gallery for his dark images. She ordered in blank canvases and tubes of oil paint. She read Nietzsche beside him, beneath the fluorescent portrait he painted of Japanese author Yukio Mishima.' \n\nBowie himself recalled of sharing with Iggy 'Our daily routines were quite opposite. And Iggy would always devour anything he could find in the fridge, which really got on my nerves. I was the one who did the grocery shopping, and he’d eat everything up. Sometimes, I’d treat myself to some really tasty stuff, like when I went to KaDeWe’s gourmet floor, but a few hours later, it was all gone again. It drove me nuts. So, he moved out and got an apartment in the same building, directly across from mine.' (Tagesspiegel, 2002).\n","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Keys to apartment at Haupstraβe 155, Berlin, lived in by David Bowie, 1976-1978","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[{"text":"Berlin (city)","id":"x28746"}],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[{"text":"Iggy Pop","id":"N10160"}],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[{"text":"Album: Low (1977)","id":"AUTH401599"},{"text":"Heroes","id":"AUTH401600"}],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["LOAN:AMERICASFOUNDATION.1524:1-2024","LOAN:AMERICASFOUNDATION.1524:2-2024"],"accessionNumberNum":"1524","accessionNumberPrefix":"LOAN:AMERICASFOUNDATION","accessionYear":2024,"otherNumbers":[{"type":{"text":"David Bowie Archive Number","id":"THES394108"},"number":"1977.3057.0025"}],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2026-05-08","recordCreationDate":"2024-06-11","availableToBook":false}}
