The original David Bowie Archive database states that this stylophone was 'given to DB by Marc Bolan'. \n\nHowever, long time friend and producer Tony Visconti disputes this. He has been quoted as saying 'I was not aware of that. Maybe it was, but I think we all got given a batch of them at the same time' (Record Collector Magazine interview, 2019), and 'No, Marc Bolan didn't give him one as a present, as they were far from friendly during that period. His Stylophone was a complimentary sample sent to his manager Ken Pitt from the company.' (Bowiedownunder.com interview, 2009). \n\nDubreq Stylophones were first released in London in 1968, and were originally marketed as children's toys; however, they soon became a favourite of musicians. Although it is not clear how Bowie obtained this stylophone, he is pictured with it in publicity images in November 1968, and then used it in the composition and recording of 'Space Oddity', creating a distinct warbling, vibrato sound.
