label on inside of neckline of jacket"}],"objectHistory":"Bowie owned a number of early Issey Miyake pieces, which were worn by either Bowie or members of his entourage as daywear during the Ziggy Stardust era. Taken from Miyake’s first collection, which was presented at the end of 1970, these culotte-style trousers are based on the traditional Japanese technique of “sashiko” quilting, which first appeared in the 8th century. “Shashiko” consisted of quilted fabric in primary colours, top-stitched with geometrical motifs, and was traditionally used to make garments for judo and kendo (fencing). Miyake’s early collections emphasised his rural Japanese roots, and his use of “shashiko” encouraged practicality and durability in this vein. These trousers were possibly bought from the Issey Miyake corner at the Escalade Department Store, Knightsbridge, which opened in 1972.\n\nThis ensemble was labelled as 'Ziggy Stardust Daywear', and was worn by Bowie offstage during this era. This jacket, purchased from Bus Stop on Kensington Church Street, served as a template for several different jackets produced by Freddie Burretti for Bowie, including the quilted two-piece worn during Bowie's first performance on Top of the Pops in July 1972, and the suit worn on the cover of <i>The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars</i>.
