Burretti designed many of the earliest and most recognisable Ziggy Stardust outfits worn both on and off stage, and worked closely with Bowie to establish the overall Ziggy “look”. Burretti also designed many of the two-piece suits worn by Bowie throughout the Diamond Dogs tour in 1974. Burretti’s tailoring is often recognisable by its use of women’s silhouettes, wide lapels and collars and narrow nipped-in waists, as well as by his use of brightly coloured fabrics and textiles, often purchased from Liberty in London or from the fashionable boutiques on Kensington Church Street.\n\nThis suit is a replica of the two-piece suit made by Freddie Burretti and worn by David Bowie for his 1972 photoshoot with Brian Ward for the album cover of The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars. The fabric for the original suit was bought by Bowie from a market stall in Nicosia, Cyprus, having been made by Cypriot tailor Takis Antoniouu. For this replica suit, material was sourced from Liberty - entitled the 'Corbusier' pattern, it designed by Bernard Nevill and first released in 1969. Bowie designed the initial sketch for the suit, with Burretti cutting the pattern and sewing the ensemble with the assistance of Sue Frost, one of Bowie’s neighbours at Haddon Hall at the time. \r\n\r\nThis style of quilted suit was inspired by the aggressive suits worn by the Droogs in Stanley Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange, which was released the previous year. Burretti used colourful and luxurious fabrics purchased from Liberty and from street markets across London to subvert the violence of the Droog look, with Bowie stating ‘it was a Dada thing – this extreme ultraviolence in Liberty fabrics’. A jacket designed by Lee Bender and purchased from Bus Stop on Kensington Church Street (LOAN:AMERICASFOUNDATION.1028:1) served as the template for this style of Burretti suit.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Replica of two-piece zip-up suit made by Freddie Burretti and worn by David Bowie on the cover of The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars in 1972, year unknown","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Mick Rock and David Bowie, Moonage Daydream: The Life and Times of Ziggy Stardust (Great Britain, 2005)"},{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Oriole Cullen, 'Changes: Bowie's Life Story' in Victoria Broackes and Geoffrey Marsh (ed.), David Bowie Is (Great Britain, 2013)"},{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Nicholas Pegg, The Complete David Bowie (Great Britain, 2016)"}],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[{"text":"Album: The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars (1972)","id":"AUTH401592"}],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["LOAN:AMERICASFOUNDATION.1024:1-2024","LOAN:AMERICASFOUNDATION.1024:2-2024","LOAN:AMERICASFOUNDATION.1024:3-2024"],"accessionNumberNum":"1024","accessionNumberPrefix":"LOAN:AMERICASFOUNDATION","accessionYear":2024,"otherNumbers":[{"type":{"text":"David Bowie Archive Number","id":"THES394108"},"number":"1972.2001.0020"}],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2026-04-12","recordCreationDate":"2024-06-11","availableToBook":false}}
