Burretti designed many of the earliest and most recognisable Ziggy Stardust outfits worn both on and off stage, and worked closely with Bowie to establish the overall Ziggy “look”. Burretti also designed many of the two-piece suits worn by Bowie throughout the Diamond Dogs tour in 1974. Burretti’s tailoring is often recognisable by its use of women’s silhouettes, wide lapels and collars and narrow nipped-in waists, as well as by his use of brightly coloured fabrics and textiles, often purchased from Liberty in London or from the fashionable boutiques on Kensington Church Street.\n\nFreddie Burretti designed this suit for Bowie’s first performance on Top of The Pops in July 1972. This quilted suit, as well the matching zip-jackets and tight trouser combinations worn by the Spiders from Mars band, were inspired by the aggressive suits worn by the Droogs in Stanley Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange, which was released the previous year. Burretti used colourful and luxurious fabrics purchased from Liberty and from street markets across London to subvert the violence of the Droog look, with Bowie stating ‘it was a Dada thing – this extreme ultraviolence in Liberty fabrics’. A jacket designed by Lee Bender and purchased from Bus Stop on Kensington Church Street (LOAN:AMERICASFOUNDATION.1028:1) served as the template for this style of Burretti suit. A number of suits were produced in this quilted style for the Ziggy era, with only three surviving Bowie’s rigorous touring schedule.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Two piece zip-up suit designed by Freddie Burretti for David Bowie as Ziggy Stardust, 1972","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Oriole Cullen, 'Changes: Bowie's Life Story' in Victoria Broackes and Geoffrey Marsh (ed.), David Bowie Is (Great Britain, 2013)"},{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Nicholas Pegg, The Complete David Bowie (Great Britain, 2016)"},{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Mick Rock and David Bowie, Moonage Daydream: The Life and Times of Ziggy Stardust (Great Britain, 2005)"}],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[{"text":"Concert tour: The Ziggy Stardust Tour (29 January 1972 - 3 July 1973)","id":"AUTH401669"}],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["LOAN:AMERICASFOUNDATION.1019:1-2024","LOAN:AMERICASFOUNDATION.1019:2-2024"],"accessionNumberNum":"1019","accessionNumberPrefix":"LOAN:AMERICASFOUNDATION","accessionYear":2024,"otherNumbers":[{"type":{"text":"David Bowie Archive Number","id":"THES394108"},"number":"1972.2001.0014"}],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2026-04-27","recordCreationDate":"2024-06-11","availableToBook":false}}
