An all-in-one jumpsuit with a high, stand-up collar, long sleeves and extremely wide pointed legs that form a diamond shape when worn. The jumpsuit is made of a quilted, sparkly, metallic synthetic material resembling lame. It has black and blue metal snap closures all the way around the neck, arms, waist and outer legs, and is only connected at the inner legs. The majority of the jumpsuit is black, with metallic bright blue panels across the shoulders, and a concentric pattern of large blue, red and black diamond shapes flaring out from the chest, across the legs. This is identical on the back panel of the jumpsuit.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Yamamoto, Kansai","id":"A19770"},"association":{"text":"designer and maker","id":"x34662"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"synthetic fabric","id":"x33026"},{"text":"thread","id":"AAT14250"},{"text":"metal","id":"AAT10900"},{"text":"plastic","id":"AAT14570"}],"techniques":[{"text":"quilting","id":"AAT53656"},{"text":"machine sewing","id":"AAT257463"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Machine sewn, quilted synthetic material, with plastic and metal fastenings","categories":[{"text":"David Bowie Archive","id":"THES394093"},{"text":"Entertainment and leisure","id":"THES48959"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&P","id":"THES48602"},"images":["2012FT2418","2012FT2414","2012FT2415","2012FT2416","2012FT2417","2012FN5025","2012FN5026","2025PG6776","2025PG6778","2025PG6777","2025PE6284","2025PE6288","2025PE6287","2025PE6286","2025PE6285"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES343586"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"jumpsuits","id":"AAT209835"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Japan","id":"x29399"},"association":{"text":"designed and made","id":"x39722"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1972-3","earliest":"1972-01-01","latest":"1973-12-31"},"association":{"text":"designed and made","id":"x39722"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"LOAN:AMERICASFOUNDATION.2985-2025","id":"O1807037"},"association":""},{"object":{"text":"S.427-2024","id":"O1775192"},"association":""},{"object":{"text":"DBA/2/1/4/3","id":"ARC270030"},"association":""},{"object":{"text":"DBA/5/11/10","id":"ARC258043"},"association":""},{"object":{"text":"DBA/5/11/3","id":"ARC258036"},"association":""}],"creditLine":"Lent by the V&A Americas Foundation through the generosity of Jones/Tintoretto Entertainment Company LLC","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"164","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"151","unit":"cm","qualifier":"widest point","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"71","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"Sleeve length","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"42.6","unit":"cm","qualifier":"Waist","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"18.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"Collar","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"This costume was entitled 'Space Samurai' and was designed by Japanese designer Kansai Yamamoto. The jumpsuit was created by Yamamoto by adapting the hakama, a type of loose trouser worn by samurais and still used today by martial arts practitioners. Bowie wore this jumpsuit onstage during the Ziggy Stardust live tour, and later during The 1980 Floor Show at London's Marquee Club in October 1973. The costume was worn during the first song of the show, a medley of the then-unreleased '1984' and an unreleased demo 'Dodo'. Bowie begins the show wearing the jumpsuit, along with platform shoes (S.427-2024). Partway through the song, Bowie outstretches his arms and legs, and his backing singers rip off the Kansai outfit to reveal a sleeveless unitard with keyhole design (LOAN:AMERICASFOUNDATION.2985-2024). This stage reveal is reminiscent of elements of traditional Japanese Kabuki theatre, which often included this \"hininuki\" (pull-off) technique, and by which Bowie was greatly inspired.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"'Space Samurai' jumpsuit by Kansai Yamamoto, worn by David Bowie on the The Ziggy Stardust Tour and The 1980 Floor Show, 1973","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Nicholas Pegg, The Complete David Bowie (Great Britain, 2016)"},{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Oriole Cullen, 'Changes: Bowie's Life Story' in Victoria Broackes and Geoffrey Marsh (ed.), David Bowie Is (Great Britain, 2013)"},{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Edo-Tokyo Museum (ed.), Kansai Yamamoto: The Beauty of Japan (Japan, 2008)"}],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[{"text":"Concert: The 1980 Floor Show (October 1973)","id":"AUTH401674"},{"text":"Concert tour: The Ziggy Stardust Tour (29 January 1972 - 3 July 1973)","id":"AUTH401669"}],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["LOAN:AMERICASFOUNDATION.1010-2024"],"accessionNumberNum":"1010","accessionNumberPrefix":"LOAN:AMERICASFOUNDATION","accessionYear":2024,"otherNumbers":[{"type":{"text":"David Bowie Archive Number","id":"THES394108"},"number":"1972.2001.0004"}],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2026-04-13","recordCreationDate":"2024-06-11","availableToBook":false}}
