This woodcut, which represents the different ages of man, is sophisticated in style and in the clothing of the characters depicted, suggesting it was aimed at a well-off market. \r\nPrinter Philippus Jacobus Brepols (1778–1845) was apprentice to Pieter Corbeels (1755–99) when they both fled French occupied Leuven in 1796. Corbeels became the city’s printer but died two years later, leaving Brepols to run the company, which then went on to become a pre-eminent printer in Belgium.
