In 1975, inspired by the process-oriented works of Man Ray and Marcel Duchamp as well as Outsider Art, Sandor developed an artistic process called “PHSColograms” (skol-o-grams), an acronym for Photography, Holography, Sculpture and Computer graphics. These PHSColograms are 3D images and are the precursor to 21st century computer-based VR.\r\n\r\nThe multidisciplinary nature of PHScolograms meant that there were significant number of collaborations between artists and scientific practitioners. Sandor has collaborated with notable women in STEM including Nobel Prize recipient Jennifer Doudna, Beth Stevens, Cynthia K. Thompson, Carolina Cruz-Neira, and others who have contributed to the ‘herstory’ of women in science.\r\n\r\nThe theme of architecture plays a big role in Ellen Sandor and (art)n’s artistic practice. Many key architectural figures such as Frank Lloyd Wright, Mies van der Rohe and Frank Gehry have designed iconic building within the vicinity of Chicago. The use of computer graphics opens the possibility to explore architecture design beyond physical limitations and envisions new ways of experiencing architectural spaces in the virtual world.\r\n\r\n<i>Townhouse: Revisited</i> was created for “Townhouse” an architectural competition sponsored by the Graham Foundation. This PHSCologram sculpture addresses issues of the body, public space, and touch in the architecture of virtual reality. The work was created in response to such questions as: if hard matter and gravity offer no impediment in virtual reality, what then will meeting, working and playing in spaces look like there?\r\n\r\n","physicalDescription":"A cuboid lightbox sculpture that is lit internally to illuminate the PHSColograms on the facade.
