It was filmed between 2019 and 2022 at the Bad Wolf Studios near Cardiff and on location in Wales, England and Spain.\n\nThe polar bear lorek Byrnison was designed by puppeteer William Todd-Jones with Painting Practice and Framestore and built by Wild Creations in their workshop in Cardiff. Voiced and operated by Joe Tandberg, the bear was modelled to be slightly larger than the largest known polar bear. It was wheeled on set as a spatial proxy for actors to give them practice of interacting with an animal that size. VFX replaced the model in the final edit.","physicalDescription":"Larger-than-lifesize model of a polar bear, standing.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Todd-Jones, William","id":"AUTH405853"},"association":{"text":"designers","id":"AAT25190"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Wild Creations","id":"AUTH403986"},"association":{"text":"makers","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Bad Wolf Ltd","id":"AUTH393478"},"association":{"text":"producers","id":"AAT197742"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"polystyrene","id":"AAT14492"},{"text":"fibreglass","id":"AAT183781"},{"text":"resin","id":"AAT12882"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Polystyrene, fibreglass and resin coating","categories":[{"text":"Entertainment & Leisure","id":"THES48959"},{"text":"Television","id":"THES269530"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&P","id":"THES48602"},"images":["2024PA9422","2024PA9386","2024PA9381","2024NX7053"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"106","id":"THES49925"},"free":"","case":"EXP","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"models","id":"AAT47753"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Cardiff","id":"x30514"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"2019","earliest":"2019-01-01","latest":"2019-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Bad Wolf Ltd","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"180","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"335","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"175","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Large-scale fibreglass model of the polar bear Iorek Byrnison, used in the filming process for the BBC television series <i>His Dark Materials</i>, 2019-2022","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[{"text":"It took 26 puppets and this reference figure to bring the polar bear Iorek to life in the TV adaptation of Philip Pullman's fantasy novels.
