At fifteen, Daniell accompanied his uncle to India, where he became the painter’s assistant. During his Indian sojourn he chronicled his experiences, drawinga and sketching the subcontinent's landscapes, monuments and its people. He returned to London in 1794, and began work on a series of aquatints of what he referred to as 'Oriental Scenery' (1795-1808) based on his experiences in India. Today, he is most famous for his landscape paintings featuring both accurate topographical depictions, but mostly 'fantastical' scenes of India. This portrait miniature by the artist is most likely a self-portrait and has come down to us through the Daniell family.
