Nkumanda is still making work, now aged 76. The artist did not receive formal artistic training, instead working much of his life undertaking manual work in the mining and construction trades and as a carpenter, but he was inspired to start making art after the death of his cousin in a car accident in 1975. He began making 3D models in 1991. \r\nThe work is made from crushed sand, brick, rubber, stones, tin, cardboard mixed with contact glue. The works are undated but were produced after 1991, during the transition or in the aftermath of the end of Apartheid in South Africa.\r\n     \r\nMonani Jackson Nkumanda’s skills and experience in construction and carpentry are evident in the works. They present an engaging and tactile view of daily life, showing people at work but also the infrastructure of the township, transport links and advertising.\r\n","physicalDescription":"3D model of a township in South Africa.
