This vase directly addresses menopause, experienced by women typically between the ages of 45 and 55, and is informed by her own experience of going through it. The title, ‘Cerebrum Nebula’, is Latin for ‘brain fog’,which references a common symptom of menopause. The vase was included in Moye's series entitled ‘A Menopause in Maiolica’, shown at Collect 2024. The group shown at Collect constituted a number of vases in differing shapes, all inspired by Italian maiolica of the 16th century, featuring various decorative schemes that illustrated the lived experience of menopause through inventive and witty symbolism and inscribed text. Moye views historic tin-glazed earthenwares in museums and her own work as linking the experience of women through history. She draws heavily on forms and motifs of existing Italian maiolica pharmacy jars in public museum collections such as the V&A. The ribbons containing the texts are a popular motif on such pharmaceutical wares emphasising a tension between the genuine medical symptoms of menopause and the off-hand tone of the thoughts, for example ‘why did I come in here?’.
