Rose’s photographs of the northern English industrial towns, Accrington and Leeds, have a particular focus on streetscapes showing chimney pots. There are also five photographs showing chimney pot production at the Redbank Manufacturing Company in Derbyshire. Rose’s photographs were created specifically for exhibition at the The North Country Chimney Pot Show, at Barnet Borough Arts Council Library, 12-26 April 1980. The exhibition showed modern prints of Spender’s photographs alongside Rose’s photographs and original ceramic chimney pots. \r\nRose’s photographs connect to traditions of British documentary photography in the 1980s, such as the works of Martin Parr, Paul Graham, Graham Smith, Homer Sykes, Marketa Luskacova and Colin Jones. In addition, Rose’s images of Leeds and Accrington document the conditions in northern cities during a pivotal period of decline and transition. In 1963, he began working for the National Physical Laboratory, and in 1970 acted as a press photographer in Israel. His career moved from still photography to film following jobs as a sound assistant at Brent Film laboratory and as a clapper loader on industrial documentaries and BBC dramas at Ealing Studios. Rose became a professional focus puller and camera operator, working from 1976 for British cinematographer Larry Pizer (1925-2008). He also worked as focus puller on director Stanley Kubrick’s film Full Metal Jacket (1987). Rose later worked as a journalist, editor for Video Action! magazine, Technical Manager for OpTex Rental and served as Chair of the Guild of Television Camera Professionals.
