David Bowie's costumes for his 1997 <i>Earthling Tour </i>reflected an interest in Buddhist Himilayan cultures and dress. It is believed that these boots formed part of his wardrobe around this time, either for onstage or offstage wear. \n\nDavid Bowie had a lifelong fascination with  Buddhism and studied under the Tibetan monk Chime Youngdon Rinpoche in the late 1960s.  After attending lectures by the Dalai Lama Tenzin Gyatso throughout the 1990s, Bowie became a vocal supporter of the Free Tibet movement.
