Sigismondi says of the video 'I was inspired by the works of Francis Bacon. The video was a surreal compilation of disjointed characters', while Nicolas Pegg describes the aesthetic of the video as 'mutant Eraserhead chic'. Most of the costumes for this video were designed by David Bowie himself, and sketches can be found in archive file DBA/2/1/27/5. The costumes have surreal, distorted, and distressed elements, creating a feeling of dystopian dreams or hallucinations.\r\n\r\nThese boots are spares/alternatives for the more open 'hoof shoes' that are part of the costume LOAN:MAERICASFOUNDATION.1035-2024. This costume, worn by Bowie's bassist and music video co-star Gail Ann Dorsey, is based on a sketch by Bowie, which was itself a revival of an idea that Bowie sketched in the early 1970s. Dorsey recalled that Bowie said '...This is an outfit I want to make for you, you're gonna be a half human, half horse and a devil with horns'. At the time, Bowie had also had a fascination with minotaurs and was encorporating this imagery in much of his visual artwork.\r\n\r\nGail Ann Dorsey also wore this costume for a live performance of 'Dead Man Walking' on Top of The Pops in April 1997. \r\n","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Boots designed by David Bowie for Gail Ann Dorsey in the 'Dead Man Walking' music video, 1997","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[{"text":"Gail Ann Dorsey","id":"AUTH406384"}],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[{"text":"Album: Earthling (1997)","id":"AUTH401618"}],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["S.551:1-2024","S.551:2-2024"],"accessionNumberNum":"551","accessionNumberPrefix":"S","accessionYear":2024,"otherNumbers":[{"type":{"text":"David Bowie Archive Number","id":"THES394108"},"number":"0001.2036.0008"}],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2026-05-11","recordCreationDate":"2024-03-19","availableToBook":false}}
