Bowie had originally seen the boots advertised in a six-page editorial dedicated to Yamamoto in Harpers & Queen (a forerunner of Harper's Bazaar) in July 1971, after Yamamoto's first London show; however, at £28, the boots were out of his price range, and so he had Miller copy the design. Bowie later stated that ‘as much as [he] loved [the] Kansai platform repros, they were very uncomfortable to wear', and so would often revert back to his lace-up boxing-style boots.\n\r\nA replica pair of these boots (LOAN:AMERICASFOUNDATION.1481-2024) were made in Berlin in 2014 for the David Bowie Is exhibition, owing to degredation. The replicas were used in Chicago and for the rest of the exhibition tour.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Boots made by Stan \"Dusty\" Miller at Greenway & Sons based on a Kansai Yamamoto design for David Bowie as Ziggy Stardust, 1972","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Oriole Cullen, 'Changes: Bowie's Life Story' in Victoria Broackes and Geoffrey Marsh (ed.), David Bowie Is (Great Britain, 2013)"},{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Mick Rock and David Bowie, Moonage Daydream: The Life and Times of Ziggy Stardust (Great Britain, 2005)"}],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[{"text":"Concert tour: The Ziggy Stardust Tour (29 January 1972 - 3 July 1973)","id":"AUTH401669"}],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["S.429:1-2024","S.429:2-2024"],"accessionNumberNum":"429","accessionNumberPrefix":"S","accessionYear":2024,"otherNumbers":[{"type":{"text":"David Bowie Archive Number","id":"THES394108"},"number":"1972.2001.0039"}],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2026-04-18","recordCreationDate":"2024-03-19","availableToBook":true}}
