Bowie bought a number different pairs brightly coloured platforms from Pelican, and he peerformed often wearing them during the Ziggy Stardust era. This shoes were customised by Bowie and first worn on the Ziggy Stardust live tour in 1972, before being worn in their original state for the 1972 'Space Oddity' music video. They were modified a third and final time in 1973, with the addition of black patent leather straps and the adaptation of one shoe into more of a mule-style sandal, thus making the shoes mismatched. This modification was for their use by Bowie during The 1980 Floor Show, filmed at London's Marquee Club in October 1973. The shoes were worn during the first song of the show, a medly of the then-unreleased '1984' and an unreleased demo 'Dodo'. Bowie begins the show wearing a wide-legged jumpsuit entitled 'Space Samurai' (LOAN:AMERICASFOUNDATION.1010-2024), designed by Japanese designer Kansai Yamamoto, along with the platform shoes. Partway through the song, Bowie outstretches his arms and legs, and his backing singers rip off the Kansai outfit to reveal a sleeveless unitard underneath (LOAN:AMERICASFOUNDATION.2985-2025). This stage reveal is reminiscent of elements of traditional Japanese Kabuki theatre, which often included this \"hininuki\" (pull-off) technique, and by which Bowie was greatly inspired.\r\n","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Shoes designed by Pelican Footwear, worn by David Bowie on The Ziggy Stardust Tour and The 1980 Floor Show, made ca. 1972","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[{"text":"Concert tour: The Ziggy Stardust Tour (29 January 1972 - 3 July 1973)","id":"AUTH401669"},{"text":"Album: Space Oddity (1969)","id":"AUTH401589"},{"text":"Concert: The 1980 Floor Show (October 1973)","id":"AUTH401674"}],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["S.427:1-2024","S.427:2-2024"],"accessionNumberNum":"427","accessionNumberPrefix":"S","accessionYear":2024,"otherNumbers":[{"type":{"text":"David Bowie Archive Number","id":"THES394108"},"number":"1972.2001.0037"}],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2026-04-09","recordCreationDate":"2024-03-19","availableToBook":false}}
