It is collarless, with a split running all the way down the front centre of the shirt that is sewn together at the bottom hem. There are also two Velcro fastening patches around half way down the split, so when worn the shirt would be open to the mid-chest.\nThere is a slightly elasticated waist, with asymmetrical horizontal bands of stitching. Below the waist the shirt flares out in pleats. All around the shirt there are patches and flaps of material mimicking utilitarian style pockets, including one on each shoulder. The whole shirt is hand-sprayed with panels and sections of black, light grey and turquoise paint. On the back of the shirt, there is a fabric patch with an embroidered image of Friedrich Engels, with Chinese text embroidered underneath. Inside the shirt, at the bottom hem, a piece of light grey Lycra has been sewn in to create a leotard crotch.      \n \nPart 2: Trousers                             \nThe trousers are made to look as though they are formed with a double layer, joined at the waist - the inner layer is shaped like ordinary, straight leg trousers, while the outer layer is shaped like chaps trousers. The inner layer has been sprayed dark turquoise with paint, while the outer chaps layer is light silvery grey with geometric patterns of turquoise, light grey and black paint. They are actually double layered at the top and single layered on the legs. They have elasticated lines of stitching all along the legs, and at the crotch. There is a functioning pocket on the left hand thigh of the trousers with a Velcro flap. They have a concealed metal zip fly, and two button holes at the waist although no corresponding buttons remain. Moseley states that her vision for this costume was a utilitarian, underground, punk feel, citing influence from fashion designer Judy Blame and iD Magazine. Her design for the costume can be found in archive file DBA/2/1/18/2. \n\nMoseley handpainted the costume with UV paint, with a colour palette influenced by Paul Klee's 'Blue Night' painting and geometric shapes inspired by Marcel Duchamp's painting 'Nude Descending a Staircase'. The built-in chaps, straps and buckles echo utilitarian work jumpsuits. The patch sewn on to the back of the jacket is of Friedrich Engels, and is believed to have come from a collection of fabric items Bowie acquired in China.  \n\nTwo of these costumes were made and worn on the tour; at the end of the tour Bowie signed and donated one to a children's charity. \r\n\r\n","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"'Urban Space Cowboy' costume designed by Diana Moseley for David Bowie, for the Glass Spider tour, 1987","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[{"text":"Concert tour: The Glass Spider Tour (30 May - 28 Nov 1987)","id":"AUTH401723"}],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["S.376:1-2024","S.376:2-2024"],"accessionNumberNum":"376","accessionNumberPrefix":"S","accessionYear":2024,"otherNumbers":[{"type":{"text":"David Bowie Archive Number","id":"THES394108"},"number":"1987.2008.0018"}],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":["2025PK9589"],"recordModificationDate":"2026-03-30","recordCreationDate":"2024-03-19","availableToBook":false}}
