Taken from Miyake’s first collection, which was presented at the end of 1970, these culotte-style trousers are based on the traditional Japanese technique of “sashiko” quilting, which first appeared in the 8th century. “Shashiko” consisted of quilted fabric in primary colours, top-stitched with geometrical motifs, and was traditionally used to make garments for judo and kendo (fencing). Miyake’s early collections emphasised his rural Japanese roots, and his use of “shashiko” encouraged practicality and durability in this vein. These trousers were possibly bought from the Issey Miyake corner at the Escalade Department Store, Knightsbridge, which opened in 1972.
