Burretti designed many of the earliest and most recognisable Ziggy Stardust outfits worn both on and off stage, and worked closely with Bowie to establish the overall Ziggy “look”. Burretti also designed many of the two-piece suits worn by Bowie throughout the Diamond Dogs tour in 1974. Burretti’s tailoring is often recognisable by its use of women’s silhouettes, wide lapels and collars and narrow nipped-in waists, as well as by his use of brightly coloured fabrics and textiles, often purchased from Liberty in London or from the fashionable boutiques on Kensington Church Street.\n\nOn embarking on the Diamond Dogs live tour in mid-1974, Bowie set out to create a show that combined elaborate rock opera with choreographed stage musical, intending it to be ‘three-dimensional’. Whilst the stage and set of the tour was highly outlandish, including the construction of a huge bridge which extended Bowie out over the audience whilst he sung ‘Space Oddity’, Bowie’s costumes were relatively paired-back when compared the colourful bodysuits and capes worn during the Ziggy Stardust era. Bowie again worked with Freddie Burretti, who constructed a large number of double-breasted two-piece suits in various shades of more neutral browns, greys and taupes. This was to be the last project which the pair worked on together – Burretti left the tour before its end, moving to Israel and disappearing from public view.
