It features a portrait of Josiah Wedgwood (1730-1739), and impressions of the kilns used to fire ware. He was happy with his work, writing to the company in April 1940 that his initial samples were “splendidly rich in effect”. \r\n\r\nThe inner rim of the mug has been decorated with gold text ‘JOHN L CLEE / FROM ALL HIS FRIENDS AT WEDGWOOD, BARLASTON.’ John L Clee was possibly an employee at Wedgwood who retired from the factory in 1963. It was traditional for the company to gift personalised commemorative objects to departing employees.","physicalDescription":"Mug, Queen's ware, lithograph printed four panels on a black and pale blue brick background, one panel with Josiah Wedgwood I's head and shoulders and name and surrounded by pale blue spike design on white, two arched panels of a stylised bottle kiln with yellow flame pattern around edge and black and grey pots in kiln, fourth panel 'Etruria 1730' with swirl pattern above and below and 'Barlaston 1940' with circle and star pattern in yellow grey and pale blue, inside rim in gold coloured capital letters 'JOHN L CLEE / FROM ALL HIS FRIENDS AT WEDGWOOD, BARLASTON'.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Eric Ravilious","id":"A878"},"association":{"text":"Designer","id":"AAT25190"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Josiah Wedgwood and Sons","id":"A1450"},"association":{"text":"manufacturers","id":"AAT25230"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"earthenware","id":"x29356"}],"techniques":[{"text":"lithography","id":"AAT53271"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Queen's ware with lithography","categories":[{"text":"V&A Wedgwood Collection","id":"THES276060"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"WED","id":"THES270009"},"images":["2023NR1158","2023NR1157","2023NR1156"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"005","id":"THES382865"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"mugs","id":"AAT43248"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Barlaston","id":"x31989"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1940","earliest":"1935-01-01","latest":"1944-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"V&A Wedgwood Collection.
