She is the daughter of Qiao Shiguang (1937–2022), a renowned master of modern lacquer painting, whose works are part of the V&A collection (FE.533 & 534-1992). Immersed in lacquer art from a young age, Qiao Jia pursued formal training in 1992 at Wajima, Ishikawa, after earning her first degree from the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing. She later expanded her artistic perspective by studying graphic design and media art at the Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design in Germany.\n\nQiao Jia’s diverse educational background is evident in her work, which skillfully integrates elements of graphic design. She employs various inlay techniques using materials such as eggshell and mother-of-pearl, creating geometric, abstract, and linear patterns that are meticulously arranged in both regular and irregular compositions. Her pieces range from vibrant, bold designs to more refined and understated colour palettes, reflecting both tradition and modernity in lacquer art. This screen presents a mesmerizing image of speckles of light filtering through a canopy of leaves, crafted using eggshell inlay and multiple layers of lacquer blended with ashes. This intricate process results in a richly textured surface that invites closer contemplation.
