Born in Macao, he moved to Hong Kong in his early years and later was trained as a graphic artist and designer under Martha Lesser from U.S. and local architect Tao Ho, as well as ink painters Lui Shou-Kwan and Wucius Wong. In the early 1970s, together with several like-minded friends, But Tze-yung formed the Hong Kong Visual Arts Society, one of the progressive art societies in the city of the time. But Tze-yung's favorite subject is the local banyan trees. For him, the tree carries deeper meanings and represents a Chinese gentleman, Christian faith, as well as South China as a place. \r\n\r\nThe present drawing was originally acquired by Dorothy Kirkbride (1924-2010), a British artist living in Hong Kong in the 1960s and 70s, ‘who made a significant contribution at this time to the growth of the modern art movement in Hong Kong’ (Art and Artists of Twentieth-Century China, Michael Sullivan). After Ms. Kirkbride passed away, her niece Lucy Trench inherited the drawing and donated it to the V&A.","physicalDescription":"b/w charcoal drawing on paper in portrait format","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"But Tze-yung, Aser (Mr)","id":"AUTH403626"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28674"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"charcoal on paper","categories":[],"styles":[{"text":"20th century","id":"x36100"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"EAS","id":"THES48596"},"images":[],"imageResolution":"","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES396284"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Hong Kong","id":"x30049"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1970-1979","earliest":"1970-01-01","latest":"1979-12-31"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Lucy Trench","dimensions":[],"dimensionsNote":"h. 75 cm, w. 55 cm","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"The drawing depicts shreds of mists floating among giant banyan tree branches.
