In isolation, the work densely narrates the inner workings of Leonards negotiation with familial roles and lineage, the political siloing of women’s issues, and experiences of motherhood and loss. \n\r\nThis photograph contains images of the women in her family including her grandmother, mother, twin sister and her daughter. Repeated images of these individuals at different points in their lives – her mother running as young person, and just before her death from Alzheimer’s, for example – feature across the work. Images of fruit bowls act as references to female reproduction alongside tiny reproductions of a uterus and fallopian tubes, while the circle of blue at the centre of the spiral is made up of small scans of magnified sperm. Text by recognised American female poets is inscribed all over the work, referencing similar themes of gender roles and criticisms. \r\n","physicalDescription":"A photographic collage featuring images of women.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Leonard, Joanne","id":"AUTH400627"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":"Joanne Leonard (b. 1940) is an American photographer whose work is a social commentary on the role of women in society. Growing up in Los Angeles, California, she was introduced to photography at a very young age, recalling having purchased her first Kodak Brownie at age 7. Since then, she has predominantly fixed her lens on her family and advocacy-based subject matter, namely women’s rights and freedoms. She has conveyed these concepts through the modality of collage, which she feels has allowed her to meld and highlight the intersections between private and public spheres of her life.
