From 1888 it held annual exhibitions of student work in the Royal Albert Hall (which it also used as its headquarters), and by 1890 it ran over 450 classes throughout the country, many taught by women. According to an 1885 article by Eglantyne Jebb in the Magazine of Art, as well as offering classes, the Association had a repository of examples of ‘really good design’, both in the form of drawings and casts, which could be sent out to members on request. \n\nThe V&A holds a collection of these examples of ‘really good design’ along with a letter that was sent out with them from the secretary of the Association in 1899 (E.726-2024 to E.763-2024 and some drawings created by the woman who requested them. They include a mixture of transfer-printed copies of historic examples, as well as pencil and pen and ink drawings of wood carving, and rubbings taken directly from examples of historic furniture. Many are labelled HA&I, and some include detailed working notes and/or the source of the design. These include Lunefield House in Kirkby Lonsdale (designed by Alfred Waterhouse in the 1860s and demolished in 1958), Hillesley House in Gloucestershire (a 17th century house altered and extended in 1865) and Charing Church in Kent. \r\n\r\nThis collection of designs, with the letter revealing their purpose, give a fascinating insight into the activities of the Home Arts and Industries Association, which played an important role in the Arts and Crafts movement but is sometimes overlooked due to the ‘amateur’ nature of the work it produced. In its dissemination of design ‘examples’ through classes, lessons and printed design material, it obviously drew on the techniques of the South Kensington Museum. The HAIA was relatively short-lived and was ultimately absorbed into the Artworkers’ Guild. ","physicalDescription":"Drawing in pencil on paper depicting a scrollwork motif.
